TOLEDO, OH — The Toledo Young Republican Club has requested an advisory opinion from the Ohio Elections Commission following the passage of a number of property tax levies in Lucas County on November 4, 2008.
The request is regarding the phrase “not a new tax,” which often appears in the marketing material for levies that are seeking a replacement. The Club has determined that this language is misleading because the levy will actually raise the average resident’s property taxes due to the re-evaluating of it to current levels.

Toledo City Council split in its vote on support for 5 local levies
Toledo City Council has for years routinely rubber-stamped purely ceremonial resolutions offering support for tax levies appearing for a vote on Election Day, but last night the practice started a debate among the councilmen.
A majority of council last night voted to support five levies on the Nov. 4 ballot: two for Toledo Public Schools, COSI's 0.17-mill, five-year levy to reopen the downtown science museum, the Mental Health and Recovery Services Board's 10-year, 1-mill replacement levy, and the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority's 0.4-mill, five-year renewal levy request.
Council, city administrators clash over Toledo deficit
TOLEDO (WTOL) - The city of Toledo's general fund budget continues to operate with a multi-million dollar deficit. City leaders are trying to figure out what to do before the end of the year.
City of Toledo administrators got quite an earful from council members regarding the budget.
"You have to have police. You have to have fire, trash pick up. But how do you know how to budget for them when you don't know how much money you have," asked Council Member Betty Schultz.
Toledo neighbors push for 'dry' precinct
A group of neighbors in Toledo's Vistula Historic District are seeking to vote their precinct "dry" - a move aimed at two carryouts they say are magnets for crime and problems.
"We're tired of this," said Lonnie Homan, leader of the area Block Watch, gesturing to one of the carryouts in question.
Mr. Homan lives on North Superior Street, just around the corner from The Beer Dock, 932 North Huron St. He said he believes The Beer Dock is responsible for loud noise, people loitering outside the store, and general disorderliness.
Brigade homeland tours start Oct. 1
The 3rd Infantry Division’s 1st Brigade Combat Team has spent 35 of the last 60 months in Iraq patrolling in full battle rattle, helping restore essential services and escorting supply convoys.
Now they’re training for the same mission — with a twist — at home.
But this new mission marks the first time an active unit has been given a dedicated assignment to NorthCom, a joint command established in 2002 to provide command and control for federal homeland defense efforts and coordinate defense support of civil authorities.
Unspent capital improvements money to balance city budget
In addition to ordering three layoffs and shuffling seven employees into new positions yesterday, the Finkbeiner administration said it wants to use unspent 2008 capital improvement money to help balance the potential $7 million sinkhole in Toledo's general operating budget.
Mr. Reinbolt said he expects more layoffs in addition to the three he ordered yesterday. The people who lost their jobs were in the youth commission, information technology, and utilities.
He said the mayor wants to avoid cuts to the police and fire forces that could drive up overtime costs.

Break-ins target valuable metal in empty homes
Thieves scoured Kalinda Sanders' West Toledo house earlier this month, looking for anything that could be scrapped for money.
They ripped out her bathroom sink and tore a hole in the wall next to her bathtub, leaving remnants of installation scattered all over the floor.
The metal ceiling fans in the two-story home in the 1900 block of Berkshire Place, near Upton Avenue, were pulled from the ceilings.
Ms. Sanders said it looked as if a tornado had hit.
