Toledo firm eyes solution to global water shortage

Tagged:  •    •    •    •    •

I was reading the Toledo Business Journal’s recent edition, and this article caught my attention, Tech firm aims for global water purification. It’s a great story about how Innovative Water Technologies, LLC is working with the University of Toledo to develop a solution for a pressing global problem, access to clean water.

According to the article:

Toledo Music Hall of Fame may be in our future and the “Legacy: Songs in the Key of Toledo” donation

The announcement was made today at the ceremony at the Main Library to present the Library system with copies of the music compilation, “Legacy: Songs in the Key of Toledo” earlier today. The two set CD collection will be available for your listening pleasure in approximately two weeks. More information on what happened today and the announcement of the creation of an exploratory committee for a Toledo Music Hall of Fame can be found at the Toledo Free Press.

Sometimes, I get the chance to become involved in projects that I would never have been able to be even a small part of had I not started blogging, this edition of the Toledo Free Press is one of those times. As you can see by the cover that has a picture of Randy Sparks, the main focus of this issue is a the journey to create a moment of musical history. Songs in the Key of Toledo.

Food for Thought makes Blade front page…

Tagged:  •    •    •

I’ve had the opportunity to participate in Food for Thought in the past during the Friday nights when the lunches are being put together and the Saturday when the bagged lunches are being given out. If you haven’t read the Blade article, More than a meal is offered through Food For Thought, I hope you head over and read it.

In an openly biased manner, Food for Thought could have been a front page story

Toledo-area group reaches out to needy with mobile pantry appeared on the front page of the Second news section in today’s Blade; it’s one I hope gets quite a bit of reads and attention. I am not ashamed to admit I am biased when it comes to my opinion about what Food For Thought does above and beyond their mobile food pantry.

It’s Tent City Weekend

Tagged:  •    •    •

I’m heading out here in a bit to hop on my golden TARTA chariot to head downtown to the Civic Mall where Tent City will be held starting this afternoon until Sunday. If you have donations of clean warm winter clothing such as coats, there will be a collection point downtown where you can drop things off.

I recommend heading over and reading the full post, as it has updates on Tent City but I wanted to point out this part of the post written by Ken Leslie:
Urgent News
We wanted you to be alerted to a situation. Cherry Street Mission and Food for Thought are two very strong supporters of Tent City.
But due to such an increase in need, both organizations are going through a shortage of resources to help those they serve.

Great turn out for STARS games today…

Tagged:  •    •    •    •    •

Miguel and I headed over a little after noon today and watched quite a bit of the games played today at Libbey High School by the STARS League. The Mayor arrived, then District 2 Councilman D. Michael Collins. I almost thought no media was going to cover the proclamation ceremony today, but WTVG did come to cover the ceremony aspect and it was nice to see them there.

Okay, technically not Toledo since the Corn Hole Tournament was in Rossford at the IBEW Union Hall, but today was Governor Strickland’s Toledo Division of the Corn Hole Tournament.

STARS set to celebrate 50 years of a love of football and the volunteer spirit…

As someone who has lived in South Toledo almost all of my life, it seemed appropriate to take a few moments to point out that S.T.A.R.S (South Toledo Area Recreation Society) is celebrating 50 years of the program’s existence. In 1958, the league was formed to teach the fundamentals of football and cheerleading to area youth, some of which will be attending Bowsher, Libbey and Rogers, this has been done without corporate sponsorship and has been funded by fundraising efforts of those who support STARS. That alone is an achievement worth pointing out.

Thousands of disabled Ohioans in Northwest Ohio could face health care access issues…

Tagged:  •    •    •

I received an email from a regular reader who is very concerned about what is happening right now with Medicaid benefits to Aged, Blind and Disabled (ABD) members of our community. Here is the basic information she provided to me via email and I have some additional information that I’ll share at the end of this post that confirms/provides more details:
More than 4,700 disabled people in Northwest Ohio may need to find new doctors in June.
For some, it will mean seeking out new specialists and enduring long waiting periods for new patient appointments.

Well actually it could be said she took quite a few dunkings…I headed over tonight to my old elementary school, Beverly, to watch Toledo Public School Board Member Lisa Sobecki take a turn in the dunking booth for charity…It was Beverly’s yearly carnival and it appeared a good time was being had by all. This upcoming Saturday, March 15th, the Truth Art Gallery which is located at 1811 Adams Street will be holding their Grand Opening from 6 to 10 p.m. I have not yet had a chance to check out the what was done with the former Frame Shop location but from viewing some of the pictures, it looks as if a fantastic job was done in the space renovations. To give you a “sneak peak” at some of the work at the Gallery where Warren Woodberry is the Curator, here is the “Jazz Wall”:

Frances Strickland guest speaker at Peter Ujvagi Paprikas Dinner

Tagged:  •    •    •    •    •

The Paprikas Dinner For Peter Ujvagi is one of my favorite political events, partly because the food is awesome and also because it’s always a great night to meet, greet and have fun before an election. This year my husband was not able to go with me, so Ed Cichy was kind enough to be my escort.

It was Clinton Country in Toledo last night…

I was interested in seeing what the title would be for the Blade article about Hillary Clinton’s appearance last night considering that the word “Wow’s” was used twice recently to describe events related to the Obama campaign. After waiting in line for two hours outside with Hillary Clinton supporters and being inside for over four hours, we are talking about an extremely dedicated group of supporters. The mood of the crowd was amazing from those who were seated around me to the energy you could feel in the entire room.

Okay M.A.S.H. fans…this one’s for you!

Tagged:  •    •    •

Former Toledo resident, David Markland has the news on the recreation of the M.A.S.H. set at Malibu Creek State Park in L.A. In reading the article it sounds like this is something that when heading out west you are not going to want to miss seeing when it’s completed later this summer. The possibility of being able to camp out ala M.A.S.H. style sounds like it would be a great time. Those of you who are diehard fans will remember that the original set was destroyed in a fire.
